CHANGE LAB
Change management, in practice

The project is live.
Has the work
actually changed?

The system is live. Training is complete. Then pressure rises, and people return to the spreadsheet that got them through yesterday.

Follow the change

One project.
Three different
questions.

01 / The handover

The project is finished.
The change has to live somewhere.

The team has a signed procedure, training attendance records and a system that works. Those tell you what was delivered.

Now follow one task into the receiving organization.

Ask thisWhat is now available?
02 / The everyday work

Can people use it when the project team is no longer in the room?

Watch someone complete the task. Can they use the new process, or do they still need the old spreadsheet to get through it?

This is where adoption becomes visible: in what people actually do.

Ask thisWhat do people do differently?
03 / The reason for changing

A changed habit still has to produce a useful result.

Perhaps the new way is being used. Does it reduce errors, improve the service or make the work easier? If it adds effort, is the benefit worth it?

Return to the reason for the change. Compare what you expected with what is happening.

Ask thisWhat has improved?
Six aspects. One working picture.

Find the questions
you need to answer.

You don’t need to complete these in order. Start with what you know. Use the gaps to decide who to involve next.

Case for change

Why change, why now, and what happens if we do nothing?

02

Receiving organization

Whose work changes, and what will they need?

03

Driver

Who has the authority to lead and back the change?

04

Talk

How will people understand and influence the change?

05

Walk

06
